Eskom is mandated by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa to implement energy efficiency measures that would ensure the optimal use of the available electricity in the country. In order to meet the growing demand for electricity which has resulted from the exceptional economic growth in the country in recent years, Eskom is embarking on a "new build" programme. In addition to building new power stations, Eskom will also pursue energy and demand savings on a large scale to mitigate system challenges.
